Obonjan Island Croatia

Architectural Emporium were employed to devise a masterplan for the conversion of a deserted island in Croatia into a holiday destination with ongoing cultural events. Imagined as a sustainable retreat with live music, theatre, comedy, great food, relaxation and outdoor activities, it is a festival island with a difference. The island was formally a holiday camp for children, but was unused for a number of years. The proposals AE developed were required to purchase the island and kickstart the development. The proposal involved reinvigorating the pool, the amphitheatre and creating two further stages in the woods and on a new beach. All were to be linked by a network of paths lined with follies, stalls and artistic installations. The existing buildings on the island were to be converted to form permanent accommodation with temporary accommodation occupying existing but renovated camping areas. AE produced a further feasibility study for bespoke accommodation design options. Many of our original ideas and the overall strategy were implemented. The island reopened in 2016 as a popular destination. You can find out more and plan a visit on the official website: https://obonjan-island.com/
