Handymans Supermarket
Architectural Emporium are diversifying and have teamed up with friends to set up a pub, cultural venue and brewery. Our experience of designing a series of venues has been put to use for our own venture. The property positioned on Smithdown Road has a rich heritage. It was a livery, then the Sefton Park Picturedrome and subsequently a Handyman Shop for 50 years. We have retained the name and created a venue with many different uses that continue to serve the community. A new build two storey volume comprising two bars, a mezzanine brewery, cellar, kitchen and toilets is positioned within the large volume, creating two distinct primary spaces. The central volume has been built in the spirit of the Handyman and features pin board signage borrowed from the shop. The frontage, internal walls and floor have been restored and retained in their original state. Beers are made on site and also off site collaboratively with other brilliant breweries. To date we have brewed 15 different beers sold on site and at pubs, restaurants and bottle shops across Merseyside. Before we opened, we hosted a music, comedy and film festival to raise money for the refurbishment. The pub is now open and we look forward to hosting you.
